Interference of Inversion Recovery with Diffusion Weighted Imaging: Negative Apparent Diffusion Coefficients!
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) allows the determination of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). Since several tissue compartments may be present in a voxel, e.g. tissue and cerebrospinal fluid [1] or tissue and blood [2], the measured ADC is an averaged value, weighted by these partial volumes. To reduce this partial volume effect, several investigators tried to null the magnetization of one or several compartments by using an inversion recovery (IR) technique [1,3,4]. Usually it is assumed that the two techniques, DWI and inversion recovery, may be applied without interference. The aim of this work was to evaluate whether this assumption is legitimate.

Diffusion-weighted imaging, apparent diffusion coefficients, and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery MR imaging in endophthalmitis.
We describe the appearance of endogenous bacterial endophthalmitis in a patient who underwent MR imaging of the orbits before and during the course of treatment. Intraocular hyperintensity on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery and diffusion-weighted images were found very useful for diagnosing endophthalmitis. After a few days of treatment, a marked relative increase in intraocular mean appare...
متن کاملDiffusion-weighted MR imaging of an acute venous stroke: case report.
A patient with a superior sagittal sinus thrombosis had progressively worsening symptoms and signs that resolved after IV heparin therapy. MR imaging revealed abnormalities in diffusion, similar to those seen with acute arterial stroke. Abnormalities shown on a T2-weighted fast spin-echo and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images resolved completely. The findings in this report contradict t...
متن کاملFluid-attenuated inversion recovery evolution within 12 hours from stroke onset: a reliable tissue clock?
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE It has recently been proposed that fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging may serve as a surrogate marker for time of symptom onset after stroke. We assessed the hypothesis that FLAIR imaging could be used to decide if an MRI was performed within 4.5 hours from symptom onset or later. METHODS All consecutive patients with presumed stroke who underwent an MR...
متن کاملRole of Apparent diffusion coefficient value in Diffusion Weighted imaging of MRI to assessment of radiotherapy efficiency in the patient with glioma tumor during treatment
Introduction: Glioma is the most common primary malignancy of cerebral neoplasms in adults, which in spite of therapeutic significant efforts, has a very poor prognosis. The current standard treatment of these patients generally includes surgery and radiotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy with 6 courses of adjuvant use of temozolomide tabs. During these years, the nervous...
متن کاملGraded functional diffusion map-defined characteristics of apparent diffusion coefficients predict overall survival in recurrent glioblastoma treated with bevacizumab.
Diffusion imaging has shown promise as a predictive and prognostic biomarker in glioma. We assessed the ability of graded functional diffusion maps (fDMs) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) characteristics to predict overall survival (OS) in recurrent glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients treated with bevacizumab. Seventy-seven patients with recurrent GBMs were retrospectively examined. ...
